These bear hugs are hand carved from Linden wood. Each bear hug is carved from a single piece of wood by artist and woodcarver Christine Coffman. A rough sketch is drawn directly on to the wood, cut out in silhouette with a band saw, then hand carved using a single bladed carving knife. The bears are happy or silly, surprised at the hug or glad to receive it. The finished carving of the bear is stained to bring out it's details and coated with a sealant to protect it from time. Christine Coffman has been carving since the age of 12 in 1963. Bears became an important part of her collector pieces in 1988. They are still what she carves to be happy. Each carving is signed and dated.
